HOW TO BE AN INDEPENDENT TRAVELLER
Author: GEOFF EVANS

Chapter 3
What things do I need to take with me?

HOT COUNTRIES ARE HOT This may seem such an obvious statement that it does not need to be repeated, however I see many people who travel to the tropics with clothes they would wear in England These are never needed whilst on holiday and are just excess baggage. My advice is to take as little clothing as possible because if you are visiting a few destinations there is no point in carrying around clothes you will never wear. If you find that you need something you haven't brought with you, you can buy it on route (probably much cheaper than your home country) so its not worth being over worried about it.

What clothes do I need?

When travelling less is best. Be strict in your choices, remember if you are going somewhere hot you wont need heavy clothing. I find that a few t-shirts are all I end up wearing and I like to buy most of these on route because back in the UK I find that my foreign T-shirts attract a certain cache from my friends and others (many times I wish I'd bought 20 instead of just 1 as I could have recovered the cost of my holiday by selling them).

A lightweight jumper may be handy to wear in the evenings but lots of pairs of socks and tights are unnecessary. Keep in mind you can always buy something there, and what you are taking you have to carry with you. Ask yourself several times whilst packing “do I really need to take this?”
