Chapter 48

“He left early.” Mom said as I yelled about the hallway looking for Ethan.

“Where’d he go?” I asked. “It’s Saturday—not that he has a date or something.” I glanced at my reflection on my phone’s LCD, wondering if there was ‘suspicion’ written on my face or something.

“A girl named Cathy!” My mom said all of a sudden, as if she had that name popping out with the light bulb and all that above her head.

I raised one eyebrow and tried not to start interrogating my mom like crazy. “Cathy? Cathy what? What do you mean mom?” Well yeah, that was the best I could do to not freak out.

She rubbed her chin for awhile, and I was starting to get impatient. “He said he was going to see this girl named Cathy. Maybe a date or something, Lexi dearest!” She clapped, looking all happy that her son isn’t gay.

“She’s not dating that—girl, mom!” I yelled. “She’s—like—y’know! No way!”

Mom patted my shoulder, trying to be as reassuring as possible. But obviously she failed. “Now now lady, don’t be too harsh on your brother’s girlfriends! You should be happy that he’s dating someone now!” She laughed, and it made me want to slap her hand away from my shoulder. “I was getting worried about that boy!”

I removed mom’s hands away from me. “He’s not gay mom, for real.” I walked down the hall and headed for the stairs, and without even thinking, I yelled: “I’m going to Irvine’s!”
