Chapter 7

Although everything pointed towards an eating disorder, I had no actual proof, other than Katie's skeletal appearance. That was until Friday lunch time. I had been kept in by Miss Burns for not handing my homework in on time. By the time she lets me go, I'm busting for a wee. I make my way to the year 9 girls toilets and lock myself in a cubicle. As soon as I'm done, I'm about to flush the chain when I hear something. A cough? No, a splutter. Then a splash and more coughing. Someone is being sick. I unlock my door and cautiously knock on the cubicle the noise is coming from. The spluttering stops and then a little voice calls out, "Who is it?"
I recognise that voice. That strained little croak. It's Katie's.
"Katie? Is that you?"
"Katie, it's Summer. Are you ok? Shall I get a teacher?"
"No!" she calls out then slowly unlocks the door.
I step back as Katie shuffles out looking as white as a ghost.
"Are you ok?" I ask again touching her shoulder which she jumps at.
"Fine, fine", she says quickly before going over to the sink and turning on the tap.
"You didn't sound fine, you sounded like you were being sick".
Katie turns the tap off and slowly turns around.
"Why do you care? Why are you following me around like a stalker. I don't want to be your friend, I just want everyone to leave me alone!" and with that she storms out of the toilet, the door banging shut behind her. I let out a deep breath. Where did that come from? Maybe it was the fear of getting found out because I'm pretty sure, Katie made herself sick.
