Chapter 2

I cower in my trench

with guns down on me

I crouch down in fear

i am afraid to die

a mortar lands near me

and i see pieces of my friend

as i scream in terror and remorse

my tears become lost in the mud

mixed with blood and rain of days

why? i ask myself

and while i cried the guns were silenced

and a sea of green drifted across no mans land

engulfing everything, the wire, entrenchments, the very men themselves

coughing, guttering shrieks of the fog's victims

the only sounds to be heard
