Chapter 11
Safety Pin

Dragging across reluctant skin,

blood wells up and I smile.

Even though its the worst of sins,

I've been doing it for a while.

Safety isn't a good choice of words,

for this pin that I'm using.

I'm told not to by the whole world,

but its only me I'm abusing.

He asks why and I wonder too,

why do I do this to myself?

I'm ashamed of this thing I do,

but I guess I've been going through hell.

His hand touches the scars I bear,

his eyes meet mine and I fight tears.

I ask him please not to stare,

his concern confirms all my fears.

Please, I say, forgive me,

he answers its not his place.

I don't know what to do anymore,

I feel the tears fall down my face.

I'll stop, I'll stop, I say one night,

while the knife hovers over my skin.

The bad and good is the worst fight,

and finally I throw away the pin.
