Chapter 97
Irrepressible Fame

Irrepressible Fame

Riding a wave of scorching fame

Which rose up from the blue,

Unexpected notoriety eclipsed

My private quietness too.

Rapacious, noisy organizers

Demanding this and that,

No time for private, personal stuff

And no time for a chat.

Elbowed by the milling press

Blinded by the flash

Devoured at the interviews

Did I utter something rash?

Is the image up to standard?

Should I wear a different shirt,

Is the story line consistent ?

Are the bastards digging dirt?

A flurry of appearances

Where I must be seen with her,

My hair stylist was indignant

When I refused a cut like Cher.

Television footage taped

Makeup clogs the pores,

Exhausted disenchantment

Is breaking out like sores.

And of course, pretentiousness is cloying.

The rich and famous come around,

Expect me to entertain their clique

With their dismissive, nasal sound.

To lie belly up and passive

As they titillate the air

With morsels of condescending vowels

When their attention is elsewhere.

Manipulation of my waking hours

I’ve got no time of my own,

And the huge commissions levied

Each resemble a house loan.

Fame is great for film stars

They can wallow in the gloss

But this inspired poet

Is convinced it’s all a total loss!
