Chapter 76

Friends are like old velvet

Familiar and soft,

And the territory covered

Is comfortable, not lost

In tentative exploration,

Where you follow in your hat;

Because with friends it's always easy

Like the hearth fire's sleeping cat.

Conversation drifts along

Meandering at whim,

The urgency to make your point

Is completely lost to him,

The loudness and obtuseness

Is ignored as if a mist

And those funny little nuances

Are treasured, kept and kissed.

A look, a glance, a giggle,

A hand upon your arm,

An understanding smile

Conveys a world of warmth and charm.

The completeness of being

In the company of friends

Brings a loving recognition

Of the very best that this life lends.
