Chapter 6

We tumbled a good twenty feet before finally stopping. I landed on top of Edward and the flying girl landed not two feet away. She jumped to her feet as Edward helped me up.

“Who are you?” she asked us.

“I’m Edward, and this is Bella, who are you?” Edward asked in his velvet smooth voice.

“I’m Max,” she said looking us up and down. Her gaze lingered a few times on Edwards face and his arms wrapped around me protectively. His mouth was inches from my neck. The girl gasped and leapt back a foot.

“You’re a Vampire!” she said weakly.

“Yes, don’t worry, he’s not like the vampires in books or movies. In fact, I don’t find him scary at all,” I assured her.

“Not scary? Are you sure?” Edward said as he crouched down in front of me, a wicked smile breaking across his face.

“Oh come on! Not again!” I said, trying to run, but he was, of course, too fast for me.

I didn’t see him pounce but I was suddenly sailing through the air, screaming like a banshee. I landed on a bed of soft moss. Edward was crouched at my feet with a mocking grin on his face.

“What was that? What were you saying?” He said in a teasing voice.

“That you are the most terrifying being in the whole world!” I said still stunned, “and you are very cranky when you are thirsty!”

He raised one eyebrow. “What makes you think I'm thirsty?"

“Um, because your eyes are as black as the night sky.” As I finished, a twig snapped just beyond the shade of the trees. We heard a low grunt that sounded like whoever it was uttered a swear word. Max ran over to it.

“Fang! What are you doing here?!”

A very dark boy stepped out of the shadows.

“I went looking for you,” he said shamefully, “you scared the crap out of me when your wings gave out Max!”

Edward swung me up into his arms and moved his mouth toward my throat. Fang gasped and mirrored Max’s look of stark fear.

Edward looked up, “Relax, I’m not going to eat her.”

They still looked at us with horror struck eyes.

“What are you so freaked out about?” I felt I could comfort them better if I knew what was worrying them.

“Hmm, let me think. He just threw you thirty feet in the air and now he’s cradling you with his teeth inches from your throat! He’s a thirsty vampire and you aren’t scared at all?!” Max was almost screaming toward the end.

“No, no, no! He would never hurt me. He loves me and he doesn’t have to be able to read minds to know I love him too!”

“Wait, did you say he can read minds?” Came Fang’s deep voice.

“Yes I can,” said Edward with a million questions dancing in his voice. “Why?”

“Because we have a six year old that can read and control minds,” Max finished Fang’s thought. He must not be a big talker.

“Um, Edward? Can I get down now?” He set me down but kept one hand securely around my waist. Edward stepped forward to shake their hands, like the gentleman he is, but before he got more than a foot further than he was a moment ago, Fang stepped in front of Max and growled at Edward.
