Chapter 14
Asking For Permission

"Hi, mom." Savanna greeted, walking into the kitchen with her hands behind her back. "Can I ask you something?"
Marjorie stood at the counter chopping vegetables for the stew she was making.
She looked over her shoulder and smiled. "Sure. What is it?"
Savannah wanted to ask her if she could go on the trip with Holly, but she didn't know how to ask. There never seemed to be the right time for Savannah to ask her mother for favors.
"Holly invited me to spend the weekend with her in Ohio." she began. "We're going to King's Island. Can I please go?"
Marjorie looked at her daughter as if she had just asked her if she could go jump off of a bridge.
"Who's chaperoning?"
"Holly's mother." Savannah answered. "She's really nice and she knows what she's doing."
"Well, I like to meet this woman." Marjorie said doubtfully. "You know I'm not too crazy about my daughter spending the weekend with a group of friends. Especially when she's only fourteen."
Savannah groaned. Her mother always wanted her to make friends, but when she finally does her mother seemed iffy about it.
"I didn't say no." Marjorie continued. "I just want to make sure you're safe."
"I will be." Savannah insisted.
"Who else besides Holly is going to be there."
"Just some other girls." she semi-lied. She didn't want to let her know that there was also going to be boys there. Maybe her mom did have a right to be just a little concerned. She didn't know who was all going to be there. Holly just told her it would be her, Elisha, Reese, Lucas, and some other people. Savannah made a mental reminder to ask Holly who else was going to go.
Marjorie nodded. "Okay. I'll just call your friend's mom and ask her about the arrangement. Is she going to pay for you?"
"Just for the food and the places we go to." informed Savannah.
"And I guess you want me to give you some extra shopping money."
"Please?" Savannah begged, her blackish-brown eyes widening.
Her mother sighed. "I am proud that you've managed to keep your grades up. An improvement from middle school. Your teacher Mrs. Cunningham called and said you're passing her class with a C. She did say something about you needing to raise it up to at least a B plus."
"Yeah, she's kind of strict." admitted Savannah.
"She needs to be." Marjorie said sternly. "How else are you going to learn?"
Savannah knew how much her mother loved strict teachers. Her mother's favorite teacher of Savannah's was Ms. Crosby in the second grade. Ms. Crosby was right on Savannah's butt on getting her work turned in. Savannah used to hate her, but when she died from cancer when Savannah was a fifth grader, she realized how much of a help Ms. Crosby had been.
She walked over to the refrigerator where her graded tests and quizzes were magnetized on, They were all either ninety-one percent or up. Opening it up, she reached for the jar of Vlasic pickles and screwed the cap off of it without any effort.
"Only take two." Marjorie ordered. "I don't want you to get sick."
"Okay, mom." Savannah said.
She was in love with pickles. She would eat a whole jar of pickles if she could. Whenever she finished a jar, she would drink the rest of the pickle juice. One of her quirky traits.
"Oh, by the way." said Marjorie. "Davey brought some of his friends over here today. One of them asked about you."
"Who!?" Savannah asked excitedly.
She couldn't believe that one of the popular kids had asked about her. She didn't even consider herself popular.
"Some girl." her mother said. "She was Asian. A really pretty girl."
Savannah thought about the pretty Asian girl she had seen in the hallway after journalism class. She was friends with Holly and the others. Her name was Jen Nguyen. Savannah was shocked because she sort of idolized the girl's beauty.
"Yeah, I don't know her." she said. "I mean, I seen her around the school and she's probably heard of me, but I never talk to her."
"That's how you make new friends, baby." Marjorie smiled. "I told you you'll make friends. Paramount turned out to be heaven, didn't it."
"It sure did."
"Now before you leave, I need a hug." Marjorie said, expanding her arms for Savannah.
Savannah sighed. She wasn't a baby anymore. But she didn't want to argue about it. So she walked over and gave her mom a daughterly hug.
"Your dad wants you to call." announced Marjorie. "Can you please talk to him? He really wants to know how you're doing."
Savannah felt a little bit guilty for not talking to her dad since she moved to Paramount. Talking to her dad couldn't hurt. She nodded yes and went upstairs to her bedroom.
She dialed her dad's number on her cell phone. Her dad answered on the first ring.
"Hey, precious!" her dad said into the phone. "How's school up there?"
Savannah smiled at the thought of her being called precious. "It's great! I made lots of new friends. My grades are good and people seem to like me."
"I'm glad to hear that." he said enthusiastically. "But you know you just met those people, you can't expect them to be your best friends."
"I know, dad." she said, a hint of annoyance in her voice.
  "Met any cute boys?"
She thought about Carter, but decided to not tell him. She knew how he felt about her and boys. She knew how he would feelt about her liking a white boy.
"Kind of."
"Well, you tell them if they hit on you that your dad will come up their with bat."
She laughed. "I will."
She could hear voices in the background. It sounded like a woman's voice.
"Okay, just a minute." her dad said idly to the voice and then got back to Savannah. "Well, baby, I have to go. I'll talk to you later. Love you."
"Love you, too." she said. "Bye."
"Bye." he said before hanging up.
Savannah got up from her bed and walked over to her computer. She logged onto her Facebook account and saw that she had ten friend requests from people. Three of them were from her old classmates back at Graysville. She accepted all of them. A red notification popped up, revealing that Holly had written on her wall.
Holly Drake: Babygirl!!!! ♥♥♥

Savannah smiled and typed, I asked my mom if I could go to King's Island with you and she said yes. She just has to talk to your mom first.

Holly Drake: !!!! Sweet. My mommy will totally convince ur mommy to go. She has a way with adults.

Savannah Ripley: Prolly cuz she is one

Holly Drake: Ha right

Savannah wanted to say more to Holly, but her mother had called her down for dinner. She clicked off of Facebook before heading downstairs.
