the world within me

Chapter 49

i saw you stand upon that stage
your hands shivering with fright
i saw you sit upon the stage
far from my small sight

i saw you walk around that stage
your smile was barely there
i heard your singing in my mind
as i raced down the stair

i ran to embrace you in my arms
when you were done with song
the tears that fell from your eyes
when you thought you were wrong

we stood together behind those curtains
waiting for the start
with clasped hands and lowered heads
we prayed with all our heart

you won't go wrong i promised myself
and when i heard you play
somehow i thought that it was right
although you showed dismay

it was fine, almost perfect
i cannot understand
when all the world cannot see
the wrongness of this land

do not cry do not shed
those tears that make me cry
as when i saw your tears did fall
i saw the moon in the sky

it was bright and round and beautiful
a memory that lasts forever
though i saw little that day
time well spent together

for i heard your sorrows
your voice running high
and as both of you sat together
i watched my dream fly

long before i still remember
what you said that day
and now i watch you sing
now i watch you play

you're so much better she did say
and she praised your singing
both are great i believe
as you do it with feeling

we turned around and closed our eyes
to pray for her awhile
and as i prayed for both of them
she opened up and smiled

and then as fall the song did fade
the silence grew again
but this time the tears were dry
and memories remain
