the world within me

Chapter 38
loving sinners

i watched the wretched man
leaning against the green rail
he stared into the drain
his cigarette smoke leaving a trail

his face full of sickness
his heart black with sin
his hair filled with grease
red bruises on his skin

i gazed into his eyes
and fought an evil stare
to kill each missing prey
he does not ever care

his lips in a tight curl
a howling long menace
his tongue slipped out slowly
the hatred on his face

the wickedness he held
could not match the deep sorrow
that drowned his heavy heart
and drained his soul hollow

i was called to walk up to him
and reach out my small hands
to walk with him to church
and make him loving friends

but my hesitation held me back
redness flushed my face
reluctance stopped my steps
from showing him God's grace

though he wounded my heart
and cruelty he indulged in
i could not hate the sinner
only hate the sin
