Chapter 54

Maggie's P.O.V.

Persephone continued to stare at the ground while she spoke, "I was playing in the trees. Dad and Madalla were back on the picnic blanket in the meadow we had come to. It was a long way from the house. I came out of the trees and started for the blanket but Madalla told me to run and play for a while so she and Dad could talk." She paused and looked around with her eyes, "When I left back into the trees Slake found me."
Slake then took over, "I was out for lunch. I had smelled the humans nearby. I was sneaking closer to her when she saw me. No one had ever seen me before when I was coming. Incredible senses for such a small child."
Persephone managed a short smile, "I ran away from Slake. Hoping for the safety of my parents back at the picnic, I found Madalla hovering over my father with a knife. She had killed him."
It went quiet and no one spoke for a while. Then I coughed, "Why?" I rubbed my lips together, "Why did she kill him?"
A tear fell from Persephone's eye as she said, "I don't know the reason."
Slake came in again, "Before I bit her neck," He chuckled a little, "I realized what had just happened. I decided to change her instead."
Persephone nodded, "Madalla has been alive much to long. She brakes the peace in these trees between us who are different." Persephone paused, "I want her dead."
After a moment of silence Slake cleared his throat, "And so the water, Maggie?"
I sighed, "I don't know the location for I don't know where I am. But I'm sure if I find Christopher we'll find it."
"And Christopher?"
"Not easy. But I have an advantage. The connection with his feelings and mine will help locate him. But I'll have to change for the connection to be stronger."
I knelt to the ground and thought of my bloody mother. I felt my body transform and the bodily slime slip off my back. Persephone jumped a little in surprise.
Slake chuckled, "And so there is more than what meets the eye."
