Author's Note

It’s amazing the things that happen on earth everyday. You and I have to bear so many hurtful things; a lot of which are not avoidable. Whether it’s direct or indirect, we all suffer pain. At the time of my typing this right now, I’ve learned news of a family suffering from a murder-suicide in Philadelphia which left three kids parentless. Those kids will not receive the upbringing they deserve and will suffer—consciously, and subconsciously—a life through a filter of this experience.

Nothing saddens me more than these sorts of things.

The inspiration behind writing this book came from my personal hiccup of losing loved ones; there’s nothing that pains me more. It’s something I didn’t know affected me so much until recently. After some thought, and time to myself, I reflected on the first two people I had lost in my life. They were two women I loved very much: my great-aunt Synovia Barr-Brown, and my grandmother, Mary Rose Heck. From what I’ve experienced, it’s not something you ever forget.

Often times, to accompany this pain, we’re held back and discouraged by our own flaws, verbally beaten down by our own mind’s eye, and stalked by a guilty conscience.

betterHALF is about channeling those tough times, verbalizing your hurt, and using those scars—that unavoidable pain—to do what the odds say you can’t do.

I hope you all enjoy the story; it’s one that means a lot to me.

Life is only a happy ending if you, yourself, make it one.
