Chapter 23
Answered prayer

I don't know if it was coincidence, or God really did answer my prayer but the next day, Katie woke up from the coma. She was in a critical state and the doctors said her organs were still failing but she was awake and that was all that mattered. They decided to sedate her and feed her through a tube in her stomach to get her to a safe weight. I wasn't allowed to see Katie as they said her condition was too unstable. So I spent the week at home, pacing up and down, my mind consumed by thoughts and emotions. I wasn't hungry and struggled to eat. My mum got scared that I had somehow developed an Eating Disorder and threatened to take me to the doctors unless I ate a meal with her. I could swallow though and the food tasted bland and dry. All I could think about was Katie.
Days passed and still no news from the hospital, even though I had phoned up on many occasions, they said they couldn't give information about patients over the phone. It was only when I was about to give up hope, I got a call from the hospital. They said Katie has woken from the sedative and after intense re-feeding for 6 days, is in a stable condition and is allowed a visitor. I begged Mum to take me down there right that minute but as it had just gone seven, Mum said I should wait until the morning. I couldn't sleep that night and when I went down stairs in the morning for breakfast, Mum said I looked awful. I willed Mum to hurry up as she got dressed and ate her cereal while I shoved on a tracksuit and gobbled down my cornflakes. There seemed to be extra traffic on the road and it seemed an age before we finally arrived at St Johns. I knew the way to ICU and quickly walked along the corridor and turned left to Katie's room. There she was, lying in bed looking as pale as ever but alive and a little more perky. Her lips weren't as blue and when she saw me, she smiled. I will remember that smile forever.
