Chapter 133
The Ravages of Time

The days slide past so lazily

Significance seems lean,

When time’s succession glides on by

With little to redeem.

Each melding day’s importance

Has independent worth,

Each moment morphs together

Like wavelets in the surf.

Each second’s significance

Is registered here,

But they all melt together

To produce a blended, opaque year.

Awareness is usurped

By all the haziness between,

Each moments random gallop

Through the days chaotic scheme.

So hard to recall

At the end of it all,

The goodies in your breakfast

Or the colors on the wall.

A moments conversation

Is lost to zephyrs in the air

And the zephyrs are engulfed

By errant breezes everywhere.

The intentions are rock solid,

There’s no contention there

But the resultant confusion

Leaves the mind up in the air.

I shall sit here in the shadow

And rest my bones awhile,

Admire the dappled light in leafage

Scattered on the garden's pile.

Try to recollect forgotten things

That sweep across my mind,

Try to organize my thoughts

Against the ravages of time.

And on the chance that we should meet again

In some near or distant place,

Please forgive me if I fail

To put a name to your kind face.

It’s not rudeness or impudence

Or ignorance, my friend,

It’s just the ravages of time

Have stretched my tether to the end.
