Chapter 20
Shocking news

I was looking forward to Monday, the day Katie came back. The last two weeks had been really lonely and I was curious to see if she has gained any weight. However, in morning registration, Katie's seat was empty. I waited five minutes, then ten minutes, still no sign of her. When the bell went for first period, I went up to Mrs Dean.
"Miss, do you know where Katie is? She was meant to come in today?"
Mrs Dean gives me a look which tells me it's not good news.
"Summer, Katie was very ill. She had been starving herself for months and her father hadn't realized the serious extent of her condition. When they were away, she collapsed and she has now been hospitalized. She is in ICU and the doctors don't know if she is going to make it. I'm really sorry, I know you two got very close over the past two months".
I can't take it in. Everything is spinning and I feel like I'm going to be sick. What does she mean, she might not make it? Of course she will, she's only young. She was ill but not that ill to die surely? I picture Katie shoving her fingers down her throat and doing countless laps round the field. She made me promise not to tell, but if I had, maybe she wouldn't be in hospital? It was all my fault.
"Summer? Are you ok? Would you like to go to medical?"
"I'm fine",I manage to gasp, "Miss, what hospital is she in?"
"St Johns, but I don't think she is allowed visitors, at least not if she is still in ICU".
But I'm not listening, I'm already out of the door and out the school gates before she can stop me. I have to see Katie, before it's too late.
