Chapter 18
Holiday

Two days later, Katie comes into school crying her eyes out. I rush up to her and ask what's wrong.
"My Dad", she gulps in between sobs, "He is taking me away on holiday".
"Surely that's a good thing?" I ask confused.
I'd give anything to go away on holiday this year but Mum says she can't afford it living off one person's salary.
"No because he said he wants to fatten me up and make me eat. He's so sick".
I don't point out to Katie that actually, she is the one who is sick.
"When are you going?"
"Next week", she sobs.
"How long?"
"Two weeks in Ireland, we are staying with his cousins. There toilet is right outside their room so they will hear me if I throw up".
Now she is really hysterical, sobbing onto my shoulder, not caring who's watching.
"It'll be ok", I say trying to calm her down, "Two weeks will fly by then you'll be back home".
"You don't understand, I can't put on weight, I just can't".
Eventually, I manage to calm her down and wipe her eyes.
"What am I going to do Summer?" she whispers.
"Just try and eat, don't think about it as getting fat but as getting better and healthier".
I don't know who I'm trying to convince, because I'm not kidding myself and I'm certainly not kidding Katie. I just pray that she doesn't do something stupid and tries to get better. Maybe a holiday is exactly what she needs.
