Tears & Heartbreak

Chapter 12
Xander

I couldn't believe it. Axel cheated on me. With Jasper, of all people. I wasn't going to break up with him over it, but I did do a few things differently. I couldn't help it. If he wanted to hold hands, he had to take my hand. If we had our arms around each other, hands stayed where they were. Hugs were hugs with none of the touchy feely stuff. Kisses stayed strictly closed-mouthed. And I wasn't about to have sex with him if I thought he would be thinking about someone else.

He came round on Saturday. I didn't ask him to, but I was happy to see him. Stevie was out and Carrie was at a sleepover. It was just me, Jess and Damon. "Hi, babe," He smiled at me.

"Hi," I replied. He put his arms around me, and I gave him a quick hug back.

"I love you," He said.

"I love you too," I replied. He took my hand and we walked through into the living room. Jess and Damon smiled at us. I hadn't told them about him and Jasper yet. I didn't plan to, if I'm honest. "Hi, Axel," Jess smiled.

"Hey," Damon said. He glanced at the clock. Seven forty five. "Are you staying over, Axel?"

"Er..." He looked at me. I smiled slightly.

"Sure," I said. "If you want to, I mean."

"Thanks babe," He kissed my cheek. "I love you."

"Love you," I replied. I sat on the sofa. He sat beside me and put his arms around my stomach. I put my arm around his shoulders. Jess and Damon obviously sensed the tension; they exchanged a look then both shrugged.

Axel was being sweet as honey to me all day. I felt bad for being off with him but I honestly couldn't help it. Every time I looked at him I saw him and Jasper with their arms round each other, kissing. And the worst part was, in my head, they looked absolutely perfect together. Better than me and Axel, anyway.

Axel tried snuggling up closer to me. I sighed but didn't push him away. He bit his lip. "I'm sorry," He mouthed.

"It's okay," I kissed his hair. "I just... nothing."

"I love you," He whispered.

"I love you too," I said.

"I love you more," He tried. It was one of our little games, see how long we could keep up 'I love you more, No, I love you more' kind of thing until we usually ended up tickling each other in a giggly heap. But I wasn't in the mood for it right now.

"No you don't," I said firmly, kissing the top of his head again. He sighed dejectedly. I almost felt bad for him.

Almost.

But not quite.

We watched some film later on. It was a choice between The Last House On The Left or The Last Exorcism. I saw Damon's face when he read the box for Last House on The Left. He couldn't deal with a film about rape. "Last House is shit," I said, quickly. "Let's watch the other one, eh?" Damon smiled gratefully at me. I slotted the disc into the DVD player and went and sat beside Axel again.

He pretended to be scared throughout the film, so I'd put my arms around him. His phone kept beeping and buzzing with texts. It was doing my head in. "Who're you texting?" I said quietly after the film had finished.

"No one," He said, quickly. I saw the name on the screen. Jazz. I dropped my arms from around him.

"I'm going to bed," I announced, shortly.

"You want me to come with you?" Axel asked. I shrugged.

"Do whatever you want, Axel, I really don't care," I said. He bit his lip and tears glistened in his eyes as I walked away.
