My Life, Beaten

Chapter 6

We sat down at a McDonald's table.  "Wow, real expensive dinner we've got here."

"Like I said, it isn't a date.  I just need to figure some things out."

  She laughed.  "I know, hun."

  "Now, first quest-"

"Wait, wait, wait.  Me first.  What did you say your name was?"

  "Henry Smith."

"And you said I didn't know you, right?"

  " do you know me?"

  "Your mother."

"My mother?  Okay, so when did you see her?"

  "She's my neighbor."

"Oh," she said, disappointment in her voice.  "So that means the Helens' moved?"

  "No, I never said that."

  "What are you talking about?"

"I'm Henry Smith.  My adopted parents are Mr. and Mrs. Helen.  My adopted sister was Jordan.  Mr. Helen didn't want my looks tainting his last name or something."

  "Oh!  So how's Jordan?"

  "You...didn't hear, did you?"

  "Hear what, hun?"

I pulled out the picture.  "D-Do you remember this?"

"Oh my.  You, you really are her little brother, aren't you?" she asked, looking at the photo.  "I remember this, too.  That summer, it was amazing.  Now," she said, seemingly remembering I was still there, "what did you want to tell me?"

"Did you know Jordan died in her eighth grade year?"

  "You're kidding, right?"

"No, there was an explosion and-"

"Wait, but Mom said only one person was killed, Arnold something?"

  "Aiden.  Aiden Lurst."

  "Yeah, and Jordan isn't-"

"They didn't want to put the name of the 'terrorist's' name in the paper."

"Terrorist?  No, Jordan wasn't a terrorist.  There's no way she killed that boy."

Then there was an awkward silence, and as terrible as it was, I took advantage of the silence, "Do you know who Silly is?"

"My, my, my, Henry.  We are discovering such secrets, now aren't we?"

  "So, you do?"

  "Of course I do!"

I was flabbergasted.  "You're Silly?!?  Her best friend?!?  And you never noticed she wasn't in school anymore?!?"

"Shh, just let me explain, honey."

"Why should I?  My sister might still be alive if not for you!"

  "Because I wasn't there."

My jaw dropped and I quickly collected it.  "Explain."

"Not here, Henry.  People are staring and after I tell you, you might yell even more."
