Chapter 1
That first night (cont)

Lauren awoke to the sound of engines.

It was an odd sounding engine though – it seemed to chop and whir as she listened. Trying to figure it out, she sat up. She was in a small shed, sitting on the floor in the corner. There was a chair in the room – nobody was sitting in it. She had been wrapped in a blanket, and another was laid out on the floor to act as a bed. She was alone in the room.

Before she could stand, Mike walked in through the room’s only door. Seeing her awake, he smiled.

“They’re here.” He beamed at her. “The extraction has arrived.”

Suddenly Lauren managed to place the noise she could hear. Helicopters.

Following Mike out of the room, she saw three helicopters, all on the ground, and one with the blades running. A group of men in overalls were examining Mike’s car and frowning. A man in a white lab coat packed supplies into a zip lock bag – that would explain the bandages on Mike’s head, and also her own, she realised.

A man in a jumpsuit beckoned her and Mike over. Shouting to be heard over the roar of the rotor blades, he explained that the other two decoy choppers would leave at the same time, to minimise risk.

Sitting down in the back of a helicopter, Lauren finally felt safe, secure. Now that awful night was over, she could relax. She felt the exhaustion catching up with her, and had slipped back into a deep sleep before the helicopter had taken off.

Mike grinned. After all that….they were finally safe.
