Chapter 92
Boys on the Other Planet

Boys on the Other Planet

For my dear friend Jillybeans….who knows

Floating off to do their thing
The boys commence to roam
Reaching out for distant planets
Leaving loneliness at home.
Particularly with mother
Who feels the pain
Of separation anxiety
In hot tears of sad refrain.

There’s the absence of the sound
In the hall of running feet
Or the clamour for that last spoon full
Of pudding, oh so sweet.
It’s the silence of the place
Where once there was the sound
Of the merriment of family.
And the love within profound.

In reaching out for independence
And in making their mark
In the frantic search for future
In a world so fast and stark
The boys forget about the home life
And the things of recent past
And the bereft ness of a mother
In seeing childhood flee so fast.

With daughters, it’s different
They understand the pain,
They call and touch and bring home boys
Then baby things again.
For just around the corner
They know this territory is theirs
When their own abandon home
To  leave them standing on the stairs.

Sometimes in the evening
The telephone will ring
And warm family will emanate
From within the bloody thing.
A flood of familiar tones
And happiness and joy
And a mother’s smile forgives again
That other planet’s boy.
