Chapter 12
Camp Life

Trey showed us to our cabins. I was in cabin 3, with a few other girls, and Donovan had cabin 4 with a couple guys.

I could see that he was uncomfortable with the arrangement, as was I. I had learned that I could trust Donovan, but I didn't know about these other girls. They could be anyone, and I wouldn't know.

I could trust Donovan.

I didn't know about these girls.

Donovan trusted me.

He didn't trust those guys.

But rules were rules; guys and girls couldn't room together, and that was that, so we gave up.

I didn't bother to learn the girl's names. I didn't know if I could trust them, and until I was sure, I wouldn't be planning on staying here.

That first night, I snuck out of the cabin. It was against the rules, but I wasn't much for rules, and I needed some air.

I creeped down to the lake, and sat on the small beack surrounding it, watching the water.

"Fancy meeting you here," said a familiar voice right in my ear.

"Donovan! Don't sneak up on me like that!" I exclaimed, laughing in spite of myself. Soon he was laughing too, and we sat on the beach together.

We sat like that for a long time, until the sun started peeking over the horizon, and then, after a quick goodbye, we ran for out cabins.

There were about 20 of us there, with 5 to a cabin. The youngest was a little 6 year old girl, and the eldest was Trey, who was 24.

I started to enjoy my time at Camp Freedom. We learned things about survival, about fighting. Things I really needed to know. I learned the names of the girls in my cabin (Trish, Angie, Laura, and Anna), and actually followed the rules.

But nothing ever lasts.

Not in my life.
