Chapter 4
Eternal Punishment

Isaiah 61:8 - "For I, the LORD, love justice

James 4:12 - There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy.

Matthew 25:46 - "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

If you break a civil law a judge decides your sentence to fit the crime.  In the same fashion, a parent will discipline a child when he or she needs to be corrected.  All actions have consequences, but none are as severe as facing God’s Wrath on Judgment Day.

Romans 2:5 - But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

His decision is not temporary it is eternal.  Punishment in mortal life has one thing going for it, it has an end.  In death, there is no existence of time, there is no end, it is eternal or simply - FOREVER.

There are so many concepts of Hell.  Humans have quite the imaginations, and a lot of folks think of hell being like “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri. Which it could be a possibility, who knows for sure? Some people have claimed they have died and been there.  There are many books written about their experience.  It has scared them into turning their lives over to Jesus Christ.  Then there are the preachers who just preach about wrath, known as Hell Fire Preachers. The primary mission is to “scare” people into being saved.  Is this the right method to get people to turn their lives around? There are also people out there that say they will not mind going to Hell, because that is where all their friends will be. Then there are those who embrace Satan and Hell, and worship him. Whatever the case may be, I know from my spiritual biblical research that it is not a place where I want to be, or anyone for that matter, if the place truly does exist.  Even God does not want anyone to perish:

2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

If Jesus Christ is the Son of God as he claimed to be, the following are some passages where he possibly talked about eternal torment, Hell, and or separation from God:

Matthew 7:19 -Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Matthew 13:40 -"As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.

Matthew 25:41 -1"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Matthew 18:8  - If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.

Mark 3:29 - But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

Matthew 5:22  - But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Matthew 18:9 -And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

Mark 9:47 - And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

Matthew 23:33 - "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?

John 5:29  - and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

Matthew 13:42  - They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Mark 9:43  - If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out

Mark 9:45  - And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

Mark 9:48 - where”‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

Matthew 13:42 - They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 16:23  - In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

Luke 16:24  - So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

Luke 16:28  - for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

Matthew 8:12  - But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

In the King James Bible, the term "hell" is used 54 times.  Many other translations of the bible choose to take the word “hell” out of them.  Jesus referred to Hell a total of 33 times. Both the Old and New Testament refer to it 167 times.  The word Hell may not be used, but referring to the possible place is, like the above passages.  Others choose to consider the term “hell” a state of mind and not a physical place.  Whatever the case maybe, you need to decide for yourself if God is Holy and Just, will He let people get away with evil thoughts, intentions, and acts, if there is no sorrow for repentance?

If my child when she gets older does something wrong she will be punished.  I will explain to her why it is wrong, and most likely she will already know.  Her punishment will be set according to her act of defiance.  When she realizes what she has done is wrong, she will come to me and apologize.  Because of her apology, if I see that it is truly from the heart, her punishment will be lightened or lifted.

Unfortunately when we die our physical death, it is too late for us to be sorry and our punishment to be “lifted”.  We need to think about these things now in our mortal life.

Isaiah 38:18 - For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.

2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

If there was an unsolved murder, and the police were never able to catch the killer, does this mean that the killer got away with it?  Where is the justice for the victim and the family’s loss?

This act was not only against man, but it was a violation against a Holy God.  I put my faith in God for the killer to be judged and punished accordingly.

Psalm 28:4-5  - Repay them for their deeds  and for their evil work; repay them for what their hands have done and bring back upon them what they deserve.  Since they show no regard for the works of the LORD and what his hands have done, he will tear them down and never build them up again.

ALL will be judged according to our deeds no matter how severe we justify them to be, if we do not practice repentance:

Ecclesiastes 12:14 - For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Isaiah 66:16 - For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgment upon all men, and many will be those slain by the LORD.

Matthew 12:36 - But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

2 Peter 2:4 - For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;

Jude 1:6 - And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

Myths, tales, legends, and folklores have been going around for many years.  They will go around about Hell until the end of time.  Who hasn’t thought of the devil having a red skin color, horns, black goatee, and holding a pitch fork?  The point is it is hard for us to separate fact from fiction, about a place we really do not know if it “physically” exists.  If it does, this is one place I would not want to be for eternity, physically or spiritually.  On the following page is a story circulating on the internet about a team of scientists that claimed they found Hell:

The following article appeared in the well respected Finland newspaper, Ammenusastia

"As a communist I don’t believe in heaven or the Bible but as a scientist I now believe in hell," said Dr. Azzacove. "Needless to say we were shocked to make such a discovery. But we know what we saw and we know what we heard. And we are absolutely convinced that we drilled through the gates of hell!"

Dr. Azzacove continued, ". . .the drill suddenly began to rotate wildly, indicating that we had reached a large empty pocket or cavern. Temperature sensors showed a dramatic increase in heat to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit."

"We lowered a microphone, designed to detect the sounds of plate movements down the shaft. But instead of plate movements we heard a human voice screaming in pain! At first we thought the sound was coming from our own equipment."

"But when we made adjustments our worst suspicions were confirmed. The screams weren’t those of a single human, they were the screams of millions of humans!"

The story was basically “de bunked”, and was just out to get people’s attention. A made up story is a lie, but the person who made this story up may have had good intentions to get people to think about the afterlife.  We need to ask ourselves though, if Hell was ever physically found, would it change the way you think?  Would you change the way you live?  We live in a world where people need to have proof for everything.  Even if there is physical proof, people are still skeptical.  Well, Hell has been found!  This is what most biblical scholars and religions can agree on.  Hell is eternal separation from God.  Whether it is spiritual, physical, or complete no longer existence in mind, this is Hell.  This is the only reality of Hell that is fact.

In closing, I will leave you with a thought:

It has been said “For believers, physical life is the only Hell that they will ever come to know.

For non believers, physical life is the only heaven they will ever come to know.”

Since mortal life has an end and we do not know the exact date of our own demise, which could be here at any moment, a heart attack, car crash, stroke, etc.. I would much rather live my Hell now, rather than live it for eternity.

Psalm 39:4-5

4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end
       and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting is my life.

5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each man's life is but a breath.
