Chapter 22

I wish they would quit hovering. I’m FINE! I also wish that Max would just chill. This wasn’t her fault. I deserved what she did to me, even though it was accidental.

“Max, can I talk to you alone?” She looked at me like she had just committed murder to her brother. Although, I guess she would’ve if it hadn’t been for Carlisle. Everyone left the room and went upstairs. Max came and sat next to me.

“What is up with you? This was NOT your fault, so quit beating yourself up for it!” That didn’t seem to help. It looked like it only made her MORE upset... If that was possible.

“But it was,” She said in a small voice which was very uncharacteristic of her.

“It. Was. NOT!!!!! Now accept that and get over it!” She sighed and seemed to be in agreement with me. “You guys can come back now,” I barely said. I knew they would hear me. I had learned how acute their hearing was last night. Edward’s family was really cool. Especially their way of life. The amount of self-control it took to do what Edward was doing just by sitting near Bella, or any of us. They all trickled down the stares looking not too happy. The whole privacy thing was impossible with the mind reader and the super-sonic hearing. Edward shot an apologetic glance my way.

Seriously? You are apologizing for your gift?

I watched him nod slowly.

Don’t be sorry. For one thing I’m used to it, I gestured toward Angel with my head, and its something special, embrace your talent.

He sighed and nodded.

It didn’t really seem like anyone had noticed our exchange, but I was sure most everyone had. I was just sitting on the couch watching television when everybody started looking anxious.

“Where did Fang go? He was sitting right next to Max!” Esme said frantically.

“I’m right here,” I said waving at her. All the others looked at me in shock. Everyone but the flock, they looked bored.

“Amazing,” Carlisle breathed adoringly, “How does that work?”

“Well, all I really have to do is sit still and eventually I, like, blend in to my surroundings.” I shrugged and turned my attention back to the TV. I tried not to notice Edward go over and talk excitedly to Carlisle about my talent. I was sure I had gone invisible again because the murmuring got louder and more excited. I didn’t even bother to move. I didn’t exactly want to be seen. I got up to get a soda and everyone watched me materialize out of nowhere. I got a Coke out of the fridge and stood against the counter. Max walked in and did the same. It looked like she was about to say something, but Angel called her name. She sighed and walked to the living room. I followed close behind.

“There is a smidge of trouble outside,” Edward said.

“What exactly do you mean by ‘smidge’?” Max asked.

“Werewolves AND Erasers,” Angel said from behind Iggy’s protective stance.

Great. And I will be completely useless along with Bella. A liability more than an asset. Now I know how she feels, and it sucks!
