Chapter 5
Unfortunate Meeting In Town With The Slut

--Riley's POV--

My stomach clenches when I see Cara sit down across from me. Yeah, I'm nervous that I will say something embarrassing. Like when you look at someone and your brain completely shuts down, and whatever you say, you don't mean to say? That's what I'm afraid of doing. I'm afraid I will say the one thing I really don't want to say right then.

Logan comes back with the pizza. I take a slice and reach over to take a napkin. I see someone else's hand reach for a napkin too. I look up into Cara's gorgeous gold eyes and see her blush ever so slightly. She has a tiny trail of grease dripping down her chin. Keep your mouth shut, keep your mouth shut, I chant over and over in my head. She looks like she's waiting for me to take a napkin, so I frantically wave my hand to tell her to take first. She grabs one quickly and looks away.

I wonder what she would say if I told her how I feel. Does she feel the same way about me as I do to her? No, obviously not. All the other girls who like me, always flirt with me and never leave me alone. Cara's not like that. She talks to me like she does to any other person. That's one of the reasons I like her. But also one of the reasons why I'm not sure if she likes me.

In eighth grade, I was voted "Friendliest" for the superlatives. The one thing that contradicts that, is the amount of times I've turned someone down. Girls just wanna hook up with me. I don't want that. I want a girlfriend, who doesn't just want to go out with me because they think I'm hot.

I'm silent the whole time we are in Pizza Hut, thinking about Cara. I almost don't realize that we're getting ready to leave, but Will accidentally elbows me, bringing me back to reality.

We all amble outside to walk around town a bit. We are walking down Main Street when I hear from behind me, the one voice I always dread hearing, calling MY name: Ashlee's.

Ashlee is the most popular girl in our grade. Blonde hair, blue eyes. She looks and acts like a total Barbie. She is so fake, and to top it all off, she's the school slut. I think she's hooked up with just as many people as Logan has, and that's saying something. Logan, even though he's my best friend, isn't like me. When all the girls fawn over me, I turn them down, whereas when Logan gets fawned over, he hooks up with them. I'm not trying to be the good guy or anything, but-

"Riley!" Barbie interrupts my train of thought. I hesitantly turn around to see her and her posse, strutting down the sidewalk towards us. Callie, Irene, and Jodie are carrying at least seven shopping bags each, while Barbie isn't carrying any. What A Shocker.

"Riley, honey, wait for us, will you?" Barbie calls out to me, in her way-too-high-pitched voice. "That's a dear. Now where were did you think you were going without telling your girlfriend?"

I blink in shock. What did she just say? Did she really just say what I think she did? I glance over at Cara after she said that to gauge her reaction. She looks...surprised, I guess, looking back and forth between me and Barbie. She sees me watching her, and quickly drops her eyes to the ground.

"Seriously Bar--I mean, Ashlee. How many times do I have to tell you, you are not my girlfriend! All you want to do is hook up with me. And you won't even do that. Trust me." I respond stiffly. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cara look up at me when I say that.

"Awww sweetie, don't be like that. You can tell your little friends here that we are finally going out. No need to keep the cat in the bag any longer, don't you think?" She looks around at the group standing there watching our exchange. Her expression turns ugly when she sees Roxy, Adriane, and Cara, with the guys.

"What are THEY doing here? You invited THEM and not ME? How could you? Are you cheating on me? Darling, we just got together, and you already are cheating on me? Humphh," she spews angry words out her mouth like bullets towards Cara and her friends. Barbie grabs my ear and drags me around the corner, into a tiny alley. She grins at me.

"See, now you have to go out with me. If you don't, I will make your life a living hell by spreading evil rumors about you cheating on me with those losers. And people will think you are crazy for breaking up with me. No one, I repeat, no one breaks up with Ashlee Valla. But if you go out with me, I will "forgive" you for cheating on me. I am brilliant!"

Wow, conceited much? I think to myself. What the hell am I supposed to do now? She has me backed into a corner (literally) and she knows it.
