Dedicated to Pete & Levi & Bryce..par excellence M.H.X. Drainage team.

Deep in the bowels of mother earth

Beneath the realm of worms,

There lies a world of labyrinth

Beyond your dreams or terms.

Beyond your understanding,

Beyond your wildest thoughts,

A labyrinth of catacombs

Of pipes and drainage ports.

Of systematic descents

From origins to ends,

Of manholes and junctions

Deep sewers and winding bends.

Gigantic tunnels

Which hold enormous flows

Of evil smelling fluid

Which ripples as it goes.

Rats and red cockroaches

Inhabit this dark place

And teeming micro organisms

Compete for living space.

Occasional eels

Swim up the turgid flow,

And see, with each darting movement

Flashing needle teeth do show.

Lost to all and sundry

Is this subterranean plan,

Unseen and ignored

By the common average man.

Unacknowledged by the housewives

Until there is a block

Then the plumbers bill incurred

Arrives by letter as a shock.

So nastily necessary,

So unseemly to be there

But without it plague and pestilence

Would run rampant every where.

So celebrate your drainage,

Congratulate your skill

On maintaining flushing dunnies

Which keep flowing down the hill.
