Today is going to be a bad day. It has to be. I know this before I open my eyes. Before I even realize Iím fully awake. And not just because I can hear the rain pelting against the roof of my cell, indicating the approaching storm, but because today is Judgment.
I feel the soft cotton of my blanket as I run my fingers over the fine material. My cell is completely dark, an indicator that Iíve somehow beaten the sun in rising this morning. A first for me. I lie flat on my back and look up at the ceiling, or what I imagine is the ceiling, because my eyes havenít quite adjusted to the dim lighting of the room. I know I should close my eyes, try and rest but the only thing running through my mind is that today is the day my whole world will fall apart.
I feel the anxiety slowly begin to seep into my body like a virus eating away at me from the inside out, or an infection spreading to my innermost being sucking the life out of my very soul. I imagine this is what those who have passed through Judgment before me must have felt like only much, much worse. Before there were actual Trials. Before there was the Mercy. Today, like every other citizen who has violated the Law, I would find out if I too would have to pass through Judgment. Because eventually, no matter how long and how fast you run, everybody does.
